Paddlefish

American Quarry, JMR Quarry, and Lake Norman Quarry are some of the few places in North Carolina scuba divers can observe paddlefish.  Paddlefish, often referred to as “primitive fish,” are now listed as endangered, threatened, or a species of special concern.  Paddlefish are filter feeders which strain the zooplankton from the water, which help improve the visibility of the quarry water.  They are known for their distinctive snout and prehistoric look.
